Research Areas and Themes

    My research specialties are speech-language pathology, special needs education, and inclusive education. My specific interests in the area of speech-language pathology are listeners’ auditory perceptions of stuttering and speech motor activities of people who stutter. Recently, I have become more interested in conducting studies on the clinical assessment and therapy of stuttering. I have developed and published a comprehensive assessment instrument for fluency disorders, which is widely used by special needs education teachers and speech-language-hearing therapists. In the field of special needs education, I have a particular interest in the disability acceptance process of people with disabilities and their parents and guardians, and the language cognition processes of people with speech-language and/or hearing disabilities. In the area of inclusive education, I am interested in how inclusive classroom practices promote and support the success of a diverse students. Currently, I work with researchers who specialize in English language education, Japanese language education, social studies, science, mathematics, and psychology to determine how students can lead independent learning by recognizing their strengths and weaknesses rather than being distracted by feelings of inadequacy by collaborating specialists in these subject areas and psychology.

Because the specialization of faculty members varies,  you may be able to study interdisciplinarily by incorporating multiple faculty members’ specialties.
