Research Areas and Themes
My main research interests include Intercultural Understanding, Intercultural Communication Studies, Cross-Cultural Negotiation Studies, Sociolinguistics, International Education, and English Language Education as a Lingua Franca. My past research analyzes participants from diverse cultural and linguistic backgrounds who have specific cultural assumptions, perceptions, expectations and practices with varying proficiency levels in the primary languages of English and Japanese for communication. My research aims to explore the experiences of interactants from diverse cultural backgrounds with respect to their perceptions, construction of their cultural identities, and demonstration of their intercultural competence. One of my main research goals is to explore how effective factors such as intercultural sensitivity, empathy, open-mindedness, and non-judgmental attitudes can help reduce the power asymmetry among multicultural communicators in the global world.
