Prof. Sawamura has been working in the field of educational development in Africa for about 40 years since 1982, when he joined the Japan Overseas Cooperation Volunteers (JOCV) as a science and mathematics teacher in Malawi. He joined the Japan International Cooperation Agency (JICA) in 1986, the Center for the Study of International Cooperation in Education (CICE) at Hiroshima University in 1997, and has been at Osaka University since 2009.
